Three Pieces
Three Pieces is a set of audio-visual works that bring the vast digital online archive into my work. I ground this work in filmmaker and media artist Hito Steyerl’s concept of “the poor image”: bits of media from the public archive that are
…a ghost of an image, a preview, a thumbnail, an errant idea, an itinerant image distributed for free, squeezed through slow digital connections, compressed, reproduced, ripped, remixed…[1]
Three Pieces consists of my compositions, overlayed with an array of fragments from the online archive that I have collaged, reshaped, and remixed in various ways. Again, in the words of Steyerl: “Poor images show the rare, the obvious, and the unbelievable- that is, if we can still manage to decipher it.”
